Archive News 2023

23/12/2023

A addition from the Scarybeasts/billcarr2005 collection of HFE images. The download includes both HFE and SSD images;

  • The Secretary's Day, a simulation of the work of a secretary in an office, from McGraw-Hill publishers.

It is interesting to note that the Flaxcottage Archive's Computing Today collection has been uploaded to Archive.org by member indyzx. An accreditation would have been appropriate and it is assumed that indyzx contacted the various copyright holders of the articles in the magazine to make sure that permission to host on Archive.org had been obtained. indyzx is invited to contact the Archive to discuss this and future submissions from the Flaxcottage Archive to Archive.org.

Further additions from the Scarybeasts/billcarr2005 collection of HFE images. These were protected and have been archived as HFE images;

  • Reading Games 1, from HS Software, a compilation of previously released programs,
  • Sheep Dog Trial, from Jacaranda, a Maths game using coordinates,

Thanks to joachim, from the StarDot forums, an error was discovered for the entry for the FuzzBuzz package. This was an amateur compilation of literacy title made for Miles End school. One of the titles on the disc was omitted; this has now been added. The programs in the compilation were modified versions of existing titles by Anita Straker and Rob Pickering. The author of these modifications is unknown.

30/10/2023

Further additions from the Scarybeasts/billcarr2005 collection of HFE images. These have been converted to SSD images since they were unprotected.

  • Spelling from Easylearn, a spelling program,
  • Splash!, from Datapen Microtechnology, an art package controlled by a light pen,
  • WordPlus, a collection of three discs of Wordwise Plus literacy programs written for TVEI.

The TVEI Wordwise title reminded me of a piece of software I used to create educational jargon. In the 1980s and 1990s teachers were expected to write reams of educational documents covering TVEI, PACE and other similar initiatives. Almost all of these documents would be unread by the recipient.

To test this theory I implemented SIMP, a program that would create meaningless educational babble. I used SIMP many times during my career and not once did any recipient query what the program had written, especially when its sentences were interspersed with meaningful ones!

SIMP is here presented for your enjoyment.

15/09/2023

Added the missing programs for the Heineman, Primary Mathematics - Symmetry package.

The disc for this package was damaged when the title was originally added and could not be recovered. A second copy was obtained and this disc was also damaged. Thankfully billcarr2005 from StarDot Forum was able to recover the missing programs by combining data from the two damaged discs.

Thanks to a donation from Dave_E from the StarDot Forum two titles from ESM have been added. These are;

  • Crack It, a re-packaged Anita Straker title
  • Primary Language, a compilation of Anita Straker literacy titles.

ESM cannot have sold many of these discs as their contents were freely and widely available in the public domain. It also begs the question as to why ESM decided to protect the discs against copying. Due to the protection on these discs they have been archived as HFE images, which will run in the BeebJit emulator or load into a real BBC micro from a GOTEK drive.

01/08/2023

More additions after quite a time off. These include;

  • Happy Letters, a cassette title from BES,
  • Documentation for MicroPower Physics,
  • Documenttaion for MicroPower Junior Maths Pack,
  • Competitive Maths, from Schoolsoft.

Also been working on a way of archiving cassette tapes without going down the WAV to UEF route. Using the excellent DiscImage Manager (DIM) from Gerald Holdsworth, unprotected tapes are copied onto ADFS-formatted discs and imported into a new UEF image using DIM. Protected tapes, however, do not work with this method.

06/06/2023

In addition to the usual SDD, DSD and ADL files available for download we have added HFE files. These files will contain the original copy protection. The HFE files may be copied to a USB memory stick and used directly on a real BBC micro via a GOTEK floppy drive emulatoror they may be loaded into a BBC micro emulator, such as BeebJIT, and run from there.
